The biggest public works project in Rhode Island history is happening right underneath our noses. Some 270 feet underground, in fact. The Narragansett Bay Commission (NBC) is building a series of deep tunnels and pumps designed to stem the flow of raw sewage into the bay. It’s a problem dating back to the turn of the 20th century in older cities like Providence, where storm water flow and sewer drains were originally combined into a single pipe. On days of heavy rainfall, they overflow, and that spells big trouble for ecosystems like Narragansett Bay.
Working through Lead Design Manager Louis Berger & Associates, Duffy & Shanley has served as the NBC’s consultant to keep the general public informed of the whys and wherefores of the project. Our most recent endeavor was the development and production of a detailed 15 minute DVD on the project that is now being used in local schools as well as with dozens of other stakeholders.
